Roswell Dwight Hitchcock was born in 1817 in East Machias, Maine. When he was 19 he graduated from Amherst College in 1836 and then enrolled at Andover Theological Seminary, Massachusetts in 1838. He became a minister in New Hampshire from 1845-1852. He became professor of natural and revealed religion in Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine, in 1852, and in 1855 professor of church history in the Union Theological Seminary in New York, of which he was president in 1880-1887. He died in 1887 in Somerset, Massachusetts.
